Maine to Washington, on Horseback.

Last week we had an unexpected visitor at the farm, a woman riding horseback across the country looking for a nice place to take a rest. She and her horses Mercury & Wolf stayed two days before they continued on west to Washington state.

Here she is, showing her horses to water at the creek.

She was a very nice woman, I imagine it would take a lot of strength & a lot of good old fashioned guts to do what she's doing. I'm not sure everyone is as trusting or as hospitable as we'd like to think either.

There's no way I could do it. Bugs. Heat. Rain. Peeing in the bushes. Bird poop. Strangers. Sunburn. Bugs.

I'm sorry, I was looking at the negative wasn't I?

Let me rephrase that. Sunshine. Misty morning fog. Sweet little bugs. Embracing nature by relieving yourself in a bush. Talking to the birds. Hospitable people.

***I remember when I was little, waiting out in the front yard to watch the 1984 Olympic Torch Relay Runner, running past my house. It was the most amazing sight, I don't remember if it was a man or woman, but I remember how strong & sure they were.

But he (or she) had about 3,000+ other runners on their team, this woman has two trusty steeds, a tent, power bar and an atlas. Wow. I wonder if she packed alot of Charmin?
